Four Frightening Venomous Snakes in Florida

As the owner of a pest control company, I have had plenty of encounters with sneaky snakes, and I have received panicked calls from customers frantic to know whether or not a specific snake found in their landscape is dangerous, or “poisonous.” This is an understandable concern, but as owner and president of Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, it is my job to, not only exterminate them, but to make sure you know which venomous snakes in Florida constitute a danger and which ones are virtually harmless.

Snakes are not “poisonous,” but venomous. It is the venom injected into bodies through snakebites that can cause physical harm or death. Poison is something ingested, like if you were to lick your hands after handling a bufo toad or something.

Florida has four venomous snakes that can cause significant harm to humans and pets:

The Eastern Coral Snake. This nasty reptile should be avoided at all costs! It carries a neurotoxin that can paralyze the diaphragm. It has red and yellow, horizontal stripes next to each other along its slithering body, so if you see red! Stop!!

Cottonmouth/Water Moccasin

The Florida Cottonmouth aka Water Moccasin. These snakes are, obviously, water reptiles. You can identify them more from what appears to be black eye liner, found on adults and babies, which runs down, along the side of the head. This snake can be a dull black color, or it may have patterns. No matter what, look for the eye liner to identify as a cottonmouth/water moccasin.

The Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake. This one wins the award for being the one most responsible for snakebites in Florida. Beware of this little devil! This is a small snake, as snakes go, measuring only 15-20 inches long. They have a small rattle that sounds more like a buzz than a rattle. They have black spots along their back, and their bites really hurt! Their venom is not fatal, however children should be warned, as their petite size may tempt small hands!

The Eastern Diamondback Rattle. This guy is a biggie! This type grows to be between five and six feet-long, and can easily strike from a coiled position to a distance half its body length. Beware! Do not get too close for any reason, because that is how people get bitten by this snake. You can recognize this snake from the distinct diamond pattern along the body, and a very distinctive rattle at the tail’s end.

Coby is the Tentless Termite Terminator

I have had the opportunity to provide my services to many home and business owners, primarily using tentless termite treatments. Two types of termites plague wooden structures here in Tampa Bay: subterranean and dry wood.

Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control have a variety of treatment solutions to exterminate these pests.

Subterranean – These ground-dwellers face certain death when we dig 4”x6” trenches around homes and structures, and we apply one of three products that the termites carry back to their colonies and spread to their peers. This method is proven effective to transfer the insecticide to the colonies, or render their jaws paralyzed so they are unable to eat and survive.

Monitoring stations are very effective observation tools, which allow us to check for further termite activity or re-infestation. These stations are checked every three months, as a means of keeping your home or office termite-free.

Dry Wood – These are a bit more challenging to control. Often, I see massive swarms of termites, especially in older neighborhoods, where they can appear like a cloud. You can tell a home is infested with dry wood termites when it is wrapped up like a Christmas present, tented for noxious gases to penetrate cracks, crevices and places standard treatments do not cover.

The issue with tented termite treatments is the short-term effectiveness. There is also the need for you to remove yourselves, your family, pets, food, medication and cosmetics for a minimum of 72 hours. When you can safely re-enter your home, so can the termites.

Tentless termite treatments are more effective, because the high pressure foam used penetrates the wood, lasting a much longer term. In most cases, all bare wood can be treated, including attics, cabinets, walls, doors, crawl spaces, and porches.

If you’ve got a problem with subterranean or dry wood termites…or any other pest…or you simply have a question…call me at Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control today at 727-498-1977.  I’ll be happy to speak with you anytime! I am the tentless termite terminator in Tampa, St Pete, Clearwater, Dunedin, Tarpon Springs and beyond!

Rats with Fleas Present Double the Trouble

Dogs and cats make terrific pets. Like a great many people, I love‘em! What I don’t love are the fleas that find Fido & Fluffy to be suitable hosts, and who, ultimately, find their way into our homes, driving us all crazy! What’s worse? If your residence is infested by rats with fleas, this presents double the trouble, even though our initial reaction may be to place blame on our pets.

Coby's Tentless Termite & Pest Control Rats with FleasFleas are parasites that feed on blood, and they are seriously troublesome. There are as many as 2500 species of these tiny, tough, super high- and long-jumping pests, making it of vital importance to prevent and eliminate flea infestations, no matter which furry being brings these blood-suckers in the house!

Fleas lay their eggs on their furry hosts, be they dogs, cats, mice or rats, and those larvae get scratched-off onto carpets, upholstery, pet bedding, human bedding, and clothes. It can take two days to two weeks for new fleas to emerge and go in search of a blood meal. Once they get a taste of blood, their reproductive systems and cycles emerge.

When fleas chow down on a rodent, and then take a dinner cruise on Fido, eventually landing in my snuggly blanket, it is likely they have just transported and transmitted some nasty stuff to both Fido and me. You see, with flea bites, the skin becomes itchy and irritated, and can result in allergic reactions and skin eruptions, not to mention disease. I suggest you provide flea treatments for your pets, and you contact me to stop rats with fleas from exacerbating a flea infestation in and around your home.

There are various flea prevention products available at your veterinarian’s office to protect your pets, and the professionals can assist you in selecting suitable applications for Fido & Fluffy. When it comes to rats, I suggest you call me at Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control FIRST! I will ensure rats with fleas are not a danger to you, your family or your home.

I am proud to provide outstanding pest control for your home or business in Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor, St Pete, Tarpon Springs, Tampa and surrounding areas. ‘Tis the Time of Year that the Rats are Movin’ in!

Rats! As owner and president of Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, I have seen my fair share of rats in Tampa Bay. These disease-ridden rodents are troublesome, especially when temperatures start cooling, and they seek the warmth of your home and your delicious edibles upon which to survive.

Take a look around the foundation and central air lines leading into your home. Do you notice any holes or potential entry points for rats? Do you see any blackening of the stucco, stone or bricks? If so, this blackening is indicative of rats entering your residence. Their greasy, little bodies rub against the bricks, stucco or stones and leave noticeable black stains.

Rats are larger than mice and more threatening in terms of what they are capable. We, at Coby’s, can identify danger zones for rodent infestation, properly seal any potential entry points, and prepare traps that are extremely effective to rid your home of these nasty rodents. As we slip into the cooler temperatures of autumn and winter, now’s the time to take advantage of THREE FREE MONTHS of PEST CONTROL or our TERMITE offer of 25% or $250 OFF any FULL TERMITE TREATMENT!

Two Types of Termites Infest Homes in Pinellas County, FL

As owner of Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, I have experienced two types of termite infestations in Pinellas County. These wood-destroying devils are detrimental to your home and adjacent structures, silently devouring wood and stucco, leaving subtle hints of their presence, while costing you dearly.

Dry Wood Termites feast on dry wood. They can survive and thrive on the minimal amounts of moisture in dry wood for periods of time that can span years.

Signs you may have dry wood termites include tiny wings that have fallen from older termites (five years-old) littering your home; and trails or piles of what appear to be coffee grounds of a lighter color, indicative of termite waste.

Subterranean Termites are ground dwellers, and can be found in mulch, dirt and mud around the home. These termites come from colonies as large as 60,000 to several million. They are usually found in early spring, between mid-January and mid-March, and usually earlier in the day, 10 AM – 2 PM. They love temps that rise to or linger at or above 70 degrees; and they are partial to humid climates and moisture, which is why rain and dewfall can be factors to infestations under a house, in walls and even in stucco.

Subterranean termites resemble small white worms or maggots; they are winged, ant-like insects; and they appear in swarms that can look like a cloud of smoke.

If you’ve got a problem with dry wood or subterranean termites in Pinellas County, or any other pest…or you simply have a question…call me at Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control today at 727.498.1977. I’ll be happy to speak with you anytime!

Creepy Spiders in Tampa, FL

Christmas and Halloween have to be the most fun and celebrated holidays for the McConnell family. At Halloween, we put up seasonal decorations and carve our jack-o-lantern, just like many of our neighbors and friends throughout the community.

As the president and owner of Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, I always notice spider webs, and at Halloween, fake webs with the small plastic spiders strewn across tree branches, porch eaves, and inside homes, remind me of a true Halloween story about spiders in the Tampa Bay area, and one I won’t soon forget!

Web adornments were stretched far and wide throughout our home, complete with the tiny inanimate spiders. However, I happened to notice one wayward white strand that didn’t seem to belong with the decorations, and it was strung across practically every room. After closer inspection, my wife found one of the spiders was not like the others. It was bigger, rounder, and real! It was definitely responsible for the actual spider webbing spun around our home. My wife used a spray powder formula to follow the silky strand, and I’m proud to say, she eliminated the real spider.

Few things are considered creepier than spiders, and Florida is full of them. There are as many as 900 species in the Sunshine State, some that are scary-looking, but not dangerous to you or your family, and a few more even more frightening because they are venomous and can cause serious health emergencies should someone suffer a bite.

Dangerous spiders you don’t want to encounter are brown recluse and false wolf spiders. Their venom is nasty and has the potential to result in serious health issues. Common spiders in Pasco that do not pose health threat – only  scare tactics – include wolf, golden silk, spiny  & long-jawed orb weavers, black and yellow argiope, green lynx, crab, and daddy long-leg spiders.

Tentless Termite Treatments in Hillsborough

Our primary goal at Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control is to create a safe, pest-free environment, protecting your family, as well as your most important investment: your home. TENTLESS TERMITE treatments in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties in Florida is our specialty, and we have 30 years of experience in the industry to prove it!

Tenting a home for fumigation and/or applications of intense heat to eliminate termites is not cheap or convenient and it is only good for existing termites, not for future infestations. It requires the occupants leave the premises for a minimum of 72 hours, as well as remove all pets, plants, food, medicine, and cosmetics before treatment processes can even begin.

Furthermore, if you have a gas stove or fireplace, the natural gas must be shut-off for the duration of the tenting, and all pilot lights must be extinguished…just another inconvenience.

TENTLESS TERMITE treatments are preferred by homeowners in greater Tampa Bay, because they are much more cost-effective, less toxic to your home environment; and your family, pets and plants can safely remain in your residence while treatments are applied.

A special liquid insecticide is sprayed into walls, behind cabinets, and into cracks and crevices leading to dry wood surfaces throughout the interior and exterior of your home that smokey brown termites devour. The termites carry the insecticide back to their colonies where they all die. Moreover, the insecticide remains and soaks into the wood structures to inhibit the return of these destructive, wood-loving bugs for an extended period of time.

For subterranean (ground-dwelling) termites, an insecticide is sprayed along the ground surrounding your home, which the little critters will carry back to their colonies, rendering certain death to what can be hundreds of thousands of inhabitants.

If you’ve got a problem with termites, or any other pest…or you simply have a question…call Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control today at 727-498-1977, and ask for Coby. He’ll be happy to speak with you anytime!

Palmetto Bugs aka American Roaches in Pinellas County

A friend of Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, who moved to Pinellas County in 2007, told us she was warned about the cockroaches here prior to her relocation. Her friend in St Petersburg described them with adjectives like scary, flying, fast, and huge, as she simultaneously demonstrated their typical size using her thumb and index finger at a three-inch measurement.

Her friend may have exaggerated a tad about the size of these creepy bugs, but not by much. In all actuality, American Cockroaches in Pinellas County, also known as palmetto bugs, or water bugs, can grow to two inches in length, thanks to their healthy appetites for food, paper, hair, cloth and dead insects.*

What makes American cockroaches most disgusting is their affinity to nest and dwell in sewers, although they also live and breed outdoors. They love our warm, inviting, wet environment, and often enter residences and offices through cracks and crevices as small as the thickness of a quarter. Another popular way for them to invade your home or office is through shower and sink drains. You can certainly expect to find them in basements, especially after heavy rains.

As we welcome cooler temperatures, and leaves begin falling from trees, palmetto bugs will seek out piles of wet, decaying leaves to live and breed. American cockroaches go in search of food and warmth and can quickly contaminate practically anything in your home, including food preparation surfaces and eating utensils. How disgusting is that?

American cockroaches have wings and can fly, and they move quite rapidly on foot when interrupted. These track stars of insects can move 50 times their body length in a single second, which for humans, is approximately 210 mph. Wow!

Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control has been assisting home and business owners for years, by eliminating these gross, sewer-loving palmetto bugs and reducing infestations of American roaches in Pinellas County properties.

If you’ve got a problem with American cockroaches/palmetto bugs, termites, or any other pest…or you simply have a question…call Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control today at 727.498.1977, and ask for Coby.  He’ll be happy to speak with you anytime!

How To Tell If You Have Mice Or Rats In Your Tampa Bay Home

Do you hear the pitter patter of little feet across your ceiling or in your walls? Do you see little, black pellets magically appearing on your kitchen counters? If so, you may have a problem with rats in Tampa Bay, or are they mice?  What are they, and how can you get rid of them!?!

Our professionals at Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control identify the differences and provide resolutions.

Rat Coby's Pest Control

Rat

Rats and mice are both nocturnal rodents and they both seek sources of food. They both swim, jump and climb, and they willl scatter when you suddenly turn on the lights!

Rats have a more coarse fur, where mice are smooth. Rats have longer tails, but mice are far more active using their tails to eat, fight and navigate their surroundings.

Mice prefer rice, cereal and plants, but will eat practically anything. We’ve even seen tiny paw prints in softened butter! Rats are more carnivorous and opt for meat, but they, too, will eat grains, proteins, and almost anything…including mice!

Mice are generally smaller and can enter a home through a crevice as small as ¼ inch. Rats

Mouse Coby's Pest Control

Mouse

have larger heads and thicker bodies, so they just need openings of at about a ½ inch. This could be a space found along the Freon lines from your central air conditioner compressor into your home, as well as breaks in eaves or foundations.

All rodents are threatening in that they are capable of carrying disease, especially rabies. Our experts at Coby’s can identify danger zones for rodent infestation, properly seal any potential entry points, and prepare traps that are extremely effective to rid your home of these nasty rodents.

If you’ve got a problem with rats, mice, or any other pest…or you simply have a question…call Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control today at 727.462.0400 and ask for Coby.  He’ll be happy to speak with you anytime!

Learn How Bait Stations Show Termite Infestation!

Subterranean termites live underground where there is moisture, and they like to nest in wood that comes in contact with the ground. That’s how termite infestations in Pasco County homes and structures begin.

Termite colonies are often populated by as many as 1,000,000 of these destructive pests, so it makes sense you do whatever you can to eliminate the threat of termite colonies before they destroy your most valuable investment: your home.

A unique method of determining if your home could become a delicious target for subterranean termites is by using termite bait. Our professionals at Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, strategically place bait stations, or monitoring stations, in areas of your yard. Upon our return to check these stations, it is clearly visible when termites are present and thriving beneath the surface of your yard. This also demonstrates how quickly these termites spread, and could be indicative of future infestations of your home and wooden structures.

With an application of a special bait formulation, subterranean termites consume this lethal concoction and take it back to their colonies, where they die.

Our experts are skillfully trained to carefully examine your home and property to further determine what actions are necessary to prevent subterranean termite infestations in your Pasco County home.

If you’ve got a problem with termites, ants, or any other pest…or you simply have a question…call Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control today at 727.462.0400, and ask for Coby.  He’ll be happy to speak with you anytime!
