What You Need To Know About Poisonous Bufo Toads in Hillsborough County

Do you know the difference between frogs and toads? Coby McConnell, owner and president of Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, knows there is one significant difference about which you should be aware for the health and well-being of yourself, your family and your pets.

Poisonous Cane or Bufo Toad

Frogs and toads are both tailless amphibians, but there are physical traits that sharply contrast one from the other. Frogs have smooth, moist skin, and are semi-aquatic. Their back legs are longer for jumping, and they are basically harmless.

One species, Bufo toads in Hillsborough County, became native to Florida when they were released in the state’s southern regions in 1955, to control white grubs in sugar cane crops. Bufo Marinus, are a different, potentially deadly breed.

Their skin is dry, rough and warty, they have bony, straight protrusions that align parallel on each side of the head, and their back legs are shorter than those of frogs. One significant trait of the dreaded Bufo toad, otherwise known as a Giant toad, or Cane toad, is the noticeable glands which are found as lumps behind their ears, above the shoulders. These glands release a poisonous secretion when the toads are threatened or handled.

These nasty amphibians are highly-skilled at finding their own food, and have even been known to eat pet food. Be aware, Bufo toads in Hillsborough County can be found practically anywhere, but particularly in your yard’s landscaping. If you come in contact with a Bufo toad, the secretion released can cause burning eyes and skin irritation. If your pet finds a Bufo and ingests the secreted toxin, it can be fatal.

According to Florida Wildlife Extension and the University of Florida, signs your pet may have Bufo toad poisoning include “drooling, head-shaking, crying, loss of coordination, and, in more serious cases, convulsions. The dog’s or cat’s gums often turn red, an indicator used by veterinarians to distinguish toad poisoning from epilepsy. For this reason, pet owners should be familiar with their pet’s normal gum color.”*

In cases of toad poisoning, you will want to thoroughly rinse your pet’s mouth, being careful that the rinse water isn’t swallowed. Examine your pet’s gums and mouth, and gently rub to remove the toxin. In any case, you should immediately contact your veterinarian.

To humanely kill Bufo toads in Hillsborough County, first, be certain that is what you have. Cane toads have been mistaken for native frogs, so be mindful of the differences as stated above. Use gloves when handling to minimize exposure to the toad’s toxins, and put in a plastic zipper bag. Place it in the refrigerator until it goes to sleep, then pop it in the freezer. You will want to leave it in the freezer for several days to make sure it is dead. There are cases cited where these toads have “reawakened” after being in the freezer for too short a time.

Eliminate Standing Water in Tampa Bay Right Now!

Coby McConnell, owner and president of Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, is concerned your child’s sand shovel and pail may have blown around your yard during the torrential wind, rain and storms that accompanied Hurricane Hermine recently, and copious amounts of standing water in Tampa Bay remain within. Even small amounts of standing water are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

With the threat of the Zika virus already in Pinellas County, it is vital that you protect yourself, your family and your neighbors in the Tampa Bay area. Go in search of any and every area of standing water in your yard, and take appropriate measures to eliminate it. Pour it out, brush it away, or shake it off, no matter what you have to do, get rid of the standing water!

The type of mosquito that carries the Zika virus, Aedes aegypti, produces their larvae in containers that hold water. They reproduce quickly when wet, even in spaces as small as a bottle cap. That is why Coby knows how important it is to reduce and eliminate all areas of standing water in Tampa Bay promptly after showers and storms…and even after landscape irrigation systems complete watering cycles.

If you’ve got a problem with mosquitoes, or any other pest…or simply have a question…call Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control today at 727.462.0400 and ask for Coby.  He’ll be happy to speak with you anytime!

Signs of Termites in Cabinets in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco Counties | Florida

Have you recently purchased a new home with a beautiful kitchen, or remodeled your outdated kitchen or office to include new cabinets? If so, there is something Coby McConnell, owner and president of Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, thinks you should know.

In this day and age, many cabinets purchased in the United States are actually manufactured overseas and are shipped to America for use in new residential and commercial construction, as well as in remodeling projects. With all of the new homes and offices being built in Pinellas and Pasco counties, it is highly-likely there may be a hidden problem of which you should be aware.

Many new cabinets being built overseas and are constructed using 9-ply wood that is often infested with termites. These termites can lay dormant within the wood of these cabinets for a number of years before emerging to devour their surroundings… your once “perfect” cabinetry.

One sign there may be termites in cabinets in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco Counties in Florida includes the visible appearance of termite “frass”, or excrement, that looks like dirt or sawdust. If there is no reason for there to be dirt or sawdust in or around your cabinets, this should immediately throw-up a red flag. It is probably termite poop.

Another sign: Termites look a lot like ants, but you can distinguish between the two based on their physical appearance. Ants have three sections to their bodies and termites only have two.

Now that you know what to look for, don’t let these destructive pests be the end of your beautiful cabinets!  Coby has the remedies to rid and protect your home, office and cabinets from the dangers of termites.

If you’ve got a problem with termites, ants, or any other pest…or you simply have a question…call Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control today at 727.462.0400 and ask for Coby.  He’ll be happy to speak with you anytime!

How to Keep Bugs Out of Your Home

The Not-So-Fun Facts about Bugs and Rodents in Tampa, Florida

Coby McConnell

Coby McConnell, owner Coby’s Tentless Termite & Pest Control

At Coby’s Pest Control, we know there are only a few things in life more disgusting than cockroaches. You can have the most immaculate home in the neighborhood, yet these nasty creatures can still infest your home and disrupt your lives, spreading diseases like salmonella, and dysentery, as well as roach dander that can lead to allergies and asthma in your family.

I want to share with you some serious facts about bugs and rodents in Tampa that you may never have heard before.

For example:

  • Were you aware there are a variety of cockroaches that are prominent in the South?
  • Beware of Smokey Brown Cockroaches, and other large species of roaches, because they are attracted to the lights in your house at night, and they fly to doors and windows searching for cracks and crevices by which to infiltrate your home.
  • Inspect your grill carefully. Some cockroaches, especially the large Smokey Browns, live inside gas grills where they crawl all over the cooking surface when it cools in order to feed on the grease. Ewwww!
  • There are also several species of ants with which to be concerned. Imported Fire Ants are everywhere down here. They infest homes and yards, stinging adults and children, causing painful injuries and, in some cases, death.
  • Ants set-up camp in the walls of your house and, in the case of Argentine ants, number in the millions.
  • NEVER SPRAY PHAROAH ANTS WITH BUG SPRAY! This causes the colonies to multiply, resulting in
more than one troublesome group to eliminate.

You probably already know that rodents like mice and rats are notorious carriers of rabies and fleas. However, did you know they also transmit diseases like salmonella, hantavirus and lymphocytic choriomeningitis, when humans are exposed to their droppings? They are also known to munch on wiring, which can cause electrical short circuits, which may result in serious fires.

Bedbugs have emerged more prevalently in the last few years, and could very well show up in your home, especially if you travel frequently and stay in hotels.

Here’s a not-so-fun fact: Termites damage more homes in the United States each year than hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods combined!

Did you know that bees, yellow jackets and wasps kill more people in the United States each year than snakebites?

Silverfish and crickets chew holes and damage books, papers, clothing, upholstery, and other household items. Crickets also leave behind unsanitary droppings wherever they go.

Indian Meal Moths have made me crazy in recent years. They and Saw-tooth Grain Beetles are relentless, infesting bread, cereal, cornmeal, crackers, oatmeal and other grain products in your pantry.

You and your family do not have to fall victim to any of these creepy crawlies or airborne annoyances. If you’ve got a pest problem, or if you have any questions pertaining to bugs and rodents in the Tampa Bay area, call me, Coby McConnell, owner and president of Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control. It will be my pleasure to serve you! 727.462.0400.

ZIKA Virus in Florida – Coby’s Pest Control

If you’re like all of us here at Coby’s Pest Control, you hate mosquito’s. They’re irritating, they drive you crazy, they make you itch…and they make you say things you wouldn’t want your grandmother to hear.  And now we have one more big reason to hate them.  It’s called the Zika Virus!AP432922569679-940x580

Unless you’ve been living under a rock somewhere, you’ve already heard about The Zika virus and it’s link to Microcephaly in babies.CX1oRvQWEAAHfCW

And, if your also are like me, you had no idea what “Microcephaly in babies” is.

Microcephaly is a condition in which a new born baby’s head is smaller than normal.  Microcephaly usually is the result of the brain developing abnormally in the womb or not growing as it should after birth.  In fact, there have been 3,893 cases of microcephaly reported in Brazil since October, 2015, compared to only 147 cases in 2014. That’s over a 2600%…or 26 times…the number reported  last year. (At the time of this writing, researchers are looking at strong evidence that a pesticide introduced into the local water system may actually be the cause of microcephaly).

So, Zika fever is an illness carried by mosquitoes…and it has been identified in Florida,

In fact not only is it in Florida but it’s in the Tampa Bay area.

Governor Rick Scott took the unprecedented action of declaring a Public health emergency in Florida.

http://screencast.com/t/20dBMa0MrRW

Only 1 in 5 people infected with Zika virus shows symptoms. That means 80% have no clue they’re infected.10-1939-F

Signs and symptoms of Zika include:
  •  low-grade fever
  • rash
  • joint pain
  • pink eye
  • body aches
  • headaches
  • back pain
  • vomiting

How you get itYou get Zike by being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Treatments:  There is no vaccine or treatment available at this time.

Prevention: The best way to prevent the Zika virus infection is to avoid mosquito bites! Stay indoors with air-conditioning and/or screens on the windows and doors wear long pants and long sleeved shirts when outdoors.

The best way to avoid mosquito bites is to make sure to take steps to eliminate mosquitos from your property.  You might want to contact your pest management professional and consult with them about mosquito control and prevention.

Tentless Termite Treatments – Coby’s termite & pest control

Don’t even think of hiring a tentless termite company until you read this!

The other day saw a truck drive by and, on the side of it,  it read “Beware of tentless termite companies!”.

At first, I took offense to it, because Coby’s tentless termite & Pest Control is the most comprehensive tentless company in the Tampa Bay area…and beyond. I know the type of treatment that we do.  And it works very well.

WE GUARANTEE OUT WORK!

We come out to inspect your home 4 times a year…not once a year like some companies.  That way,  if there ever is a problem, we find it sooner and we take care of it as FAST.

So, as I started giving proposals for tentless termite treatments, I started asking…

  • “Have you had any other companies come out and give you a bid?”
  • “What type of treatment did they say they were going to provide?”

What I found shocked me!

Very few Tentless termite companies treated the whole house.  They only treat the spot where the termites are located. They DO NOT treat the whole house.

I must say that, if you get a bid from a company that does less than a whole house treatment… run Forrest run!

Now, I understand why the other company said “Beware of tentless termite companies”.

Because, under those circumstances, doing a spot treatment or partial treatments on a home it’s simply not going to protect the home.

As a tentless termite company, my job is to get to as much bare wood that is in your home as is possible and treat it with products that will penetrate deep into the wood.

My treatment will last for over 30 years.

We also treat with products that will transfer throughout the entire termite colony.

The most common places Coby’s treats are…

  • the attic
  • the crawlspace
  • around the doors and windows
  • and inside the wall voids
  • and in some cases we treat the floors
  • the furniture and cabinetry

The FACT is…every home is different and we customize each service to deal with the particular circumstances we find. No one-size-fits-all treatment works for all homes.

Bottom line: For almost 30 years, I have been PROVING that termite infestations can successfully be eliminated using tentless methods!

So, if you have a problem with termites…or simply a question…call Coby’s Tentless Termite & Pest Control at 727-462-0400 and ask for me, Coby McConnell, President. I’ll be happy to speak with you anytime.
