Rats and mice are both nocturnal rodents and they both seek sources of food. They both swim, jump and climb, and they willl scatter when you suddenly turn on the lights!
Rats have a more coarse fur, where mice are smooth. Rats have longer tails, but mice are far more active using their tails to eat, fight and navigate their surroundings.
Mice prefer rice, cereal and plants, but will eat practically anything. We’ve even seen tiny paw prints in softened butter! Rats are more carnivorous and opt for meat, but they, too, will eat grains, proteins, and almost anything…including mice!
Mice are generally smaller and can enter a home through a crevice as small as ¼ inch. Rats
have larger heads and thicker bodies, so they just need openings of at about a ½ inch. This could be a space found along the Freon lines from your central air conditioner compressor into your home, as well as breaks in eaves or foundations.
