Palmetto Bugs aka American Roaches in Pinellas County

A friend of Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control, who moved to Pinellas County in 2007, told us she was warned about the cockroaches here prior to her relocation. Her friend in St Petersburg described them with adjectives like scary, flying, fast, and huge, as she simultaneously demonstrated their typical size using her thumb and index finger at a three-inch measurement.

Her friend may have exaggerated a tad about the size of these creepy bugs, but not by much. In all actuality, American Cockroaches in Pinellas County, also known as palmetto bugs, or water bugs, can grow to two inches in length, thanks to their healthy appetites for food, paper, hair, cloth and dead insects.*

What makes American cockroaches most disgusting is their affinity to nest and dwell in sewers, although they also live and breed outdoors. They love our warm, inviting, wet environment, and often enter residences and offices through cracks and crevices as small as the thickness of a quarter. Another popular way for them to invade your home or office is through shower and sink drains. You can certainly expect to find them in basements, especially after heavy rains.

As we welcome cooler temperatures, and leaves begin falling from trees, palmetto bugs will seek out piles of wet, decaying leaves to live and breed. American cockroaches go in search of food and warmth and can quickly contaminate practically anything in your home, including food preparation surfaces and eating utensils. How disgusting is that?

American cockroaches have wings and can fly, and they move quite rapidly on foot when interrupted. These track stars of insects can move 50 times their body length in a single second, which for humans, is approximately 210 mph. Wow!

Coby’s Tentless Termite and Pest Control has been assisting home and business owners for years, by eliminating these gross, sewer-loving palmetto bugs and reducing infestations of American roaches in Pinellas County properties.
