Here in the Tampa Bay area, termite control is serious business. It’s a FACT that termites damage more homes in the U.S. each year than fires, floods, tornados and hurricanes combined!
There are essentially two different types of termites we deal with.
- Subterranean Termites – These are the ones that live below the soil surface (hence the name subterranean) and, due to their high moisture requirements, only travel above ground to feed.
- Drywood Termites – These are the ones that live above the soil surface and can survive and thrive in your walls, roof and ceiling without having to return to the soil for moisture.
Most of the severe damage done to homs each year is done by subterranean termites. However, drywood termites can do considerable damage as well, especially if left unchecked and allowed to grow and multiply.
Drywood termites are also capable of infesting furniture and other personal items made of wood and/or wood products.
Subterranean termites are generally controlled by using either a liquid soil barrier treatment or a termite baiting system, or in some cases, a combination of both.
Drywood termite treatments often require the house to be “tented” or fumigated. This involves wrapping the entire house in an airtight tent and injecting a gas that will penetrate all areas and kill the existing termite colony (ies).
Termite treatments can be very expensive, especially the tenting, or fumigation treatments for drywood termites.
